The temperature was hovering around 120°F (48°C). The power had gone out a few hours earlier. All the doors were open to let in whatever breeze was available outside. Everyone was lying on the cool marble floors to keep their bodies from melting.

I was holding a hand-fan in one hand and a comic book in the other. The heat didn’t keep me from dreaming about Archie’s world. Those pictures made me travel to fancy beaches, green lands, snowy mountains. They also got me to meet friendly parents, energetic kids, and wild teens.

Archie’s comics were everything my hometown wasn’t.

I grew up in a small town in the northwestern part of India where life was simple. Perhaps, too simple. We didn’t have air conditioning, washing machines, or vacuum cleaners. On some days, we didn’t even have water. It only came every four days and we had to store and manage whatever water supplies we could get.

I had three pairs of shoes — one for school, one to wear inside the house, and one for when I went somewhere. Speaking of…
