Why Too Much Positivity Can Make Your Life Toxic

Even medicine turns into poison when overused

In my career as a human energy coach, one of the biggest self-sabotaging behaviors I see is rationalization. My clients would come up with very smart justifications for their decisions and convince themselves that everything is okay. In reality, they are far from feeling okay. When we manipulate ourselves into believing or doing something we create discontent and stress in our lives.

Saying one thing and feeling another creates internal conflict, which isn’t inherently bad. On the contrary, internal conflict is necessary for growth. But it only works when we acknowledge it for what it is. Conflict. Not some fake inner peace.

Hiding or dressing up your conflicting thoughts makes you run from one place to another, one project to another, one person to another, hoping to find what you’re looking for. You want to fill this void that took over both your mind and heart. So you force yourself to repeat positive mantras, be nice to everyone around you, and smile. What you probably don’t know is that you’re poisoning your own mind with Toxic Positivity. “It’s okay,” you may tell yourself. “I just have to keep a positive mindset! Everything will be fine!”

No, it won’t.
